Fifty years ago, the first plate was laid on what would become the Great Lakes' most recognized ship: the Edmund Fitzgerald. But its career ended in one of the most tragic and legendary shipwrecks in Great Lakes history, taking 29 men down with her on Lake Superior. In this video, we explore the circumstances surrounding the Fitzgerald's sinking and why this one disaster seems to have broken a terrifying cycle of November gales claiming Great Lakes freighters, like the Carl Bradley and the Daniel J. Morrell. Was it a heightened sense of awareness? The shift to larger, more durable thousand-foot ships? The legend, as Gordon Lightfoot put it, lives on. Join us as we remember this tragic day and the sailors lost on the vast and unpredictable waters of the Great Lakes. Programming courtesy of Dan Salas.
