West Michigan Seniors Honored for Decades of Service at Themed Gala

NORTON SHORES, MI — The spirit of the Kentucky Derby arrived in Norton Shores recently, not for a horse race, but to honor the local champions of the AmeriCorps Seniors program. Hosted by Catholic Charities of West Michigan at Bella Maria’s, the "Senior Prom" served as a high-energy tribute to the volunteers who sustain the region’s Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion programs.

The event featured music by DJ Loquacious and a sea of iconic Derby-style hats, but the true focus remained on the staggering impact of senior service. The Foster Grandparent program continues to be a cornerstone for local schools, providing one-on-one mentorship for students, while the Senior Companion program ensures that homebound seniors can live with dignity and independence.

The afternoon was marked by official accolades, including Special Congressional Recognition from the office of Congressman John Moolenaar. A representative from the office of Congresswoman Hillary Scholten was also on hand to celebrate the milestones of volunteers, some of whom have served the West Michigan community for over 27 years.

Beyond the awards, the event offered a poignant moment of reflection at a memorial table dedicated to members who passed away in the last year, ensuring their legacy of kindness is not forgotten.
