The Muskegon Young Black Professionals (MYBP) is making a significant impact on Muskegon County, Michigan, fostering a supportive network and providing crucial opportunities for its young Black professionals. Founded in 2017 by Jocelyn Hines, MYBP has become a vital force in the community, offering social and professional development opportunities, from financial literacy workshops to resume building sessions and salary negotiation training. They also celebrate achievements through their prestigious Shades of Excellence Award ceremony.
Hines, who returned to Muskegon after college, recognized the need for a dedicated space for Black professionals to connect and thrive. "I really wanted to create a networking opportunity for Black professionals here in Muskegon County," she explains. This vision has blossomed into an organization that provides essential resources and recognition.
However, MYBP's journey hasn't been without its challenges. The organization's name itself has sometimes been a point of confusion, with some questioning the focus on "young" and "Black." Hines clarifies, "We are very intentional in selecting the name that we did because we want to specifically serve an underserved population here in Muskegon County." Securing funding, a common hurdle for Black-led organizations, has also been a challenge. Hines' experience in philanthropy and grant writing has been instrumental in navigating this landscape.
One of MYBP's most celebrated achievements is the annual Shades of Excellence Award ceremony. Conceived by a board member, this event not only serves as a fundraiser but, more importantly, honors and recognizes the accomplishments of Black professionals in the community. "We were looking at creative fundraising opportunities that wasn't just a gala or wasn't just a party," says Hines. Now in its fifth year, the Shades of Excellence ceremony consistently sells out, a testament to its significance and the community's enthusiasm for celebrating Black excellence. The impact of the award, both for finalists and winners, is profound, and the support from sponsors has been crucial to its continued success.
A remarkable aspect of MYBP is that it operates entirely with volunteers. "Every type of event you see, initiative we do, any type of programming is made possible by volunteers," emphasizes Hines. This dedication is a testament to the passion and commitment of the board and community members. Maintaining this volunteer base has been both a strength and a challenge. While the passion is evident, ensuring consistent engagement requires significant effort. However, the rewards, such as job progression for members and opportunities for board service, are clear indicators of the organization's positive influence.
Looking ahead, MYBP is exploring new avenues for growth. While the core mission of serving young Black professionals remains, the organization continually refines its definition of "professional" to be more inclusive. A significant development on the horizon is the potential hiring of paid staff, including an executive director, to further enhance fundraising and development efforts. This evolution from a social club to an organization with the capacity to employ individuals is a source of pride for Hines.
MYBP's story is one of dedication, resilience, and a deep commitment to empowering young Black professionals in Muskegon County. Their work is not only transforming individual lives but also enriching the entire community. The organization's continued growth and impact are a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives and the unwavering belief in the potential of young Black professionals. Keep an eye out for this year's Shades of Excellence award ceremony and join MYBP in celebrating Black excellence in Muskegon.
