At the Muskegon City Council meeting on October 24, 2023, the council unanimously proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Jillian Pastoor, a speaker from Every Woman's Place, a local organization that provides services to survivors of domestic violence, addressed the council about the importance of domestic violence awareness and prevention. She shared some statistics about domestic violence in the Muskegon community, including the fact that six new individuals walked into Every Woman's Place on the day of the meeting without an appointment, just needing help. Pastoor concluded her speech by asking the council to recognize October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and to encourage individuals to learn more about how to prevent domestic violence.
The council's unanimous approval of the resolution is a reminder of the importance of domestic violence awareness and prevention. It is also a reminder that there are resources available to help survivors of domestic violence. If you are experiencing domestic violence, please reach out for help. You are not alone.
